Our beautiful beer garden is one of the jewels of Bellingham Ex Servicemen's Club. Set across a generous paved and grassed area to the rear of the building, it's the perfect spot to enjoy a well-earned drink in the fresh Northumbrian air.
Partially covered with a weatherproof canopy and equipped with outdoor heaters, the garden is usable even in cooler months. Perfect for summer afternoons, garden parties, and relaxed evenings with friends.
Our full-size professional pool table is a cornerstone of the club's social scene. Whether you're a seasoned player or a complete beginner, you're welcome to pick up a cue and enjoy a game.
We run a regular pool league throughout the year, and our annual Bellingham Cup tournament draws players from across the region. Cues and balls are available at the bar.
Darts is in the blood at Bellingham Ex Servicemen's Club. We have two regulation bristle dartboards with proper oche markings and excellent lighting — set up for serious play.
We participate in the local darts league and host open competitions, welcoming players from affiliated clubs across Northumberland. Club darts are available, or bring your own.

The garden is home to a central commemorative stone, floral displays tended by club volunteers, and dedicated plaques honouring specific vessels, regiments, and campaigns. It provides a dignified setting for our annual commemorative events, which draw members, their families, and the wider community together each year.
We gather each year on VE Day to remember and celebrate the end of the Second World War in Europe. A wreath-laying ceremony takes place in the Memorial Garden, followed by a toast to all those who served. Open to all members, families, and the public.
VJ Day is observed with equal solemnity and pride. We honour the often-overlooked service of those who fought in the Far East theatre, many of whom endured extraordinary hardship. A deeply meaningful day for many of our members and their families.
One of our most poignant and important annual events. On 24th May 1941, HMS Hood — the pride of the Royal Navy — was sunk by the German battleship Bismarck in the Denmark Strait. Of her crew of 1,418, only three survived. We hold a solemn memorial service in the garden each year to ensure those 1,415 men are never forgotten. A dedicated plaque in the Memorial Garden bears their memory.
At the heart of the club is our welcoming bar, offering a superb selection of real ales, lagers, wines, spirits, and soft drinks — all at member-friendly prices that you simply won't find on the high street.

Eighty years of service, comradeship, and community in the heart of Bellingham
Bellingham Ex Servicemen's Social Club was established in 1933 by a group of local veterans and former servicemen who wanted a place of their own — somewhere familiar faces could meet, share experiences, and support one another. What began as a modest gathering has grown over nine decades into the beating heart of our community.
The founding members believed that those who had served their country deserved a place of their own: somewhere affordable, welcoming, and unpretentious. That founding principle remains at the core of everything we do today.
Through the decades, membership has ebbed and flowed, the building has been improved and extended, and the entertainment has evolved — but the spirit of the club has never changed. We remain a place built on mutual respect, genuine warmth, and the simple pleasure of good company.
Membership: The club is open to all ex-servicemen and women, their spouses, partners, and family members. Associate membership is available for those who share our values. Please ask at the bar for a membership form.
A group of local veterans and former servicemen come together to establish a club of their own — a place to meet, support one another, and keep the bonds of service alive. The Bellingham Ex Servicemen's Club holds its first official meeting in 1933.
The club purchases its current premises at 10 Allerford Road. The building is renovated by members themselves, with the bar opening to members in 1954.
Our large Memorial Garden is established — a permanent place of quiet reflection and remembrance. A commemorative stone is laid and the first annual service held to honour those who gave their lives, including the 1,415 crew of HMS Hood lost on 24th May 1941.
The first live entertainment night is held, with local musicians performing for members. A tradition that continues to this day is born.
A major building project adds the function room, the beer garden, and the games area to the club, nearly doubling the available space.
Sky Sports is installed — a decision that transforms Friday and Saturday nights and brings new generations of members through the doors.
Membership rules are updated to welcome the families and partners of ex-servicemen, strengthening community ties across Bellingham.
A special year of celebrations marks the club's 75th anniversary. A new commemorative plaque is unveiled in the Memorial Garden recognising the founding members and honouring the annual remembrance events.
With over 400 members, a packed events calendar, and the Memorial Garden standing as a proud focal point of remembrance, Bellingham Ex Servicemen's Club looks to its future while honouring over 90 remarkable years of service.

"Lest We Forget"Our large Memorial Garden stands as the spiritual centre of Bellingham Ex Servicemen's Club. Established in 1958 by founding members who felt strongly that the fallen deserved a permanent, peaceful place of honour, it has been lovingly tended by club volunteers ever since.
At its centre stands a commemorative stone engraved with the words "In Honour of All Who Served." Around it, seasonal floral displays, dedicated plaques, and a specially commissioned anchor monument create a space of genuine beauty and dignity.
Each year the garden hosts our three most important commemorative events — VE Day, VJ Day, and our especially poignant service marking the sinking of HMS Hood. These are open to all: members, families, and the public.
The garden is open to visitors during club opening hours. All are welcome to visit quietly and pay their respects at any time.
Three dates hold special significance in our calendar. All are held in the Memorial Garden and open to everyone.
On 8th May 1945, the Second World War in Europe came to an end with Germany's unconditional surrender. Each year on this date we gather in the Memorial Garden for a wreath-laying ceremony, a minute's silence, and a toast to all those who served — and to those who gave everything so that we might be free.
The service begins at 11:00am and is open to all. Members are invited to wear their medals with pride. Refreshments are served in the club afterwards.
"She was the largest warship in the world — and in eight minutes, she was gone. Of 1,418 men aboard, only three survived."— Denmark Strait, 24th May 1941, 06:00am
HMS Hood — the "Mighty Hood" — was the pride of the Royal Navy and a symbol of British naval power. On the morning of 24th May 1941, she engaged the German battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen in the Denmark Strait. A catastrophic magazine explosion tore her apart. She sank in less than three minutes. 1,415 men lost their lives.
This is the commemoration closest to many of our members' hearts. A dedicated HMS Hood plaque stands in our Memorial Garden, and each year we hold a solemn service to ensure those men — and that ship — are never, ever forgotten. The service includes a reading of names, a wreath-laying at the plaque, and the sounding of the Last Post.
The three survivors were: Able Seaman Robert Tilburn, Midshipman William Dundas, and Able Seaman Ted Briggs.
15th August 1945 marked the end of the Second World War in the Far East following Japan's surrender. VJ Day honours the service of those who fought in one of history's most demanding theatres of war — men and women who endured extreme conditions, great distances from home, and, for many thousands, the horrors of captivity as prisoners of war.
Their sacrifice is sometimes overlooked. At Bellingham Ex Servicemen's Club, we make sure it is not. Our annual VJ Day service includes a wreath-laying, a reading, and a reception in the club where members can share stories and memories.
